Sylvia L. Asa, MD, PhD, FRCP(C), FCAP

Sylvia Asa, MD, PhD is the Pathologist-in-Chief at the University Health Network and Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto. She received her medical and post-doctorate degrees from the University of Toronto and completed her internship in internal medicine at Toronto General Hospital and the University of Toronto. She received her residency training in pathology at Mount Sinai Hospital, St. Michael’s Hospital and the Toronto General Hospital, all affiliated with the University of Toronto. She subsequently was a research fellow in the Department of Pathology at St. Michael’s Hospital and the University of Toronto.


Peter Banks, M.D.

Peter Banks

Dr. Banks is currently the Director of Hematopathology at Carolinas Medical Center in North Carolina, and has been practicing, teaching, and publishing extensively for over 30 years. He has twice been recognized by The Best Doctors in America, and twice won Teacher of the Year honors (in pathology) at the Mayo Clinic. His current academic appointment is as Adjunct Professor of Pathology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he continues to actively participate in resident education. He has also held leadership positions at many influential professional organizations, including the Society for Hematopathology (President 1996-1998), and the North Carolina Society of Pathologists (President-Elect).


Richard A. Bender, M.D., F.A.C.P.

Dr. Bender is the Chief Medical Officer and VP for Agendia B.V, a leader in genomic testing for cancer. Dr. Bender received his MD degree from the UCLA School of Medicine followed by specialty training in Internal Medicine at UCLA-Harbor General Hospital. He then spent the next 6 years at the National Cancer Institute receiving his subspecialty training in hematology and medical oncology and as a senior investigator in the Medicine Branch doing laboratory and clinical research. He then moved to Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation where he spent an additional 4 years dividing his time between laboratory research in folate transport and clinical practice. In 1982, he began a 2-decade career at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego, helping to develop their oncology program into one of the busiest in the western US. In addition, Dr. Bender served on the executive board of the San Diego Hospice and American Cancer Society and served as a clinical instructor at the UC, San Diego School of Medicine during this period. He was also a Senior Director in the oncology division of Johnson and Johnson, and the medical director for hematology and oncology for Quest Diagnostics, a position he held for almost 6 years. He continues to teach at the UC, Irvine School of Medicine and to co-edit Anti-Cancer Drugs, an international oncology journal, as well at to serve as an expert reviewer in oncology for the Medical Board of California. Dr. Bender is the author of over 70 peer-reviewed scientific articles and numerous book chapters on topics including malignant lymphoma, pancreatic cancer and the clinical pharmacology of Vinca alkaloids.


Kathrine Frey, M.D.

Katherine Frey

Dr. Frey is an anatomic and clinical pathologist at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Minnesota, where she is also Director of Transfusion Medicine Services. Although most of her time is devoted to anatomic pathology, Dr. Frey has also been highly involved in transfusion medicine, including serving on blood center boards and in medical advisory roles. Dr. Frey’s current interests include human factors engineering and high reliability industrial principles as applied to pathology as well as management and prevention of patient adverse events. She is an active participant on an error reduction project with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and has recently joined the Quality and Practice Committee of the College of American Pathologists.


Eric Glassy, M.D.

Dr. Glassy, who trained as a pathologist, is currently Information Systems Director and New Media Consultant at Pathology Inc. and Laboratory Director at Little Company of Mary Hospital in San Pedro, CA. Previously, Dr. Glassy has practiced pathology and directed laboratories throughout California, while also holding adjunct faculty positions at CSU Fullerton. Dr. Glassy is a member of the Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Society and has won numerous pathology awards. He has chaired many hospital committees as well as national committees for the College of American Pathologists. He has edited, written and illustrated several medical textbooks and developed software programs such as ePathComposer, ePathBanker, ePathFish, and PathTrac, for pathology reporting, outreach, and practice management. He also holds a green belt in Six Sigma.


Keith J. Kaplan, M.D.

Keith Kaplan

Dr. Kaplan is a surgical pathologist at Mayo Clinic and associate professor of pathology at Mayo Medical School in Rochester, MN. He received his MD degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine followed by residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. While at Walter Reed, in conjunction with the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, he founded and directed the Army Telepathology Program connecting 25 hospitals worldwide for consultation via telepathology. He has authored over 60 peer-reviewed scientific articles book chapters, editorials and scientific abstracts. His subspecialty interests include gastrointestinal and hepatic pathology, cytopathology and pathology informatics and he has presented at national and international meetings on those topics. Dr. Kaplan’s research interests involve gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary pathology, hyperspectral imaging, image analysis and the use of Web 2.0 tools in pathology. He is active in many medical societies including the College of American Pathologists where he has chaired or served on several committees, serves as a reviewer for many scientific journals, serves on the editorial board for Human Pathology and blogs daily at www.digitalpathologyblog.com.


Luke A. Perkocha, M.D., MBA

Luke A. Perkocha

Dr. Perkocha recently joined the faculty of the University of California, San Francisco, as Associate Professor in the Departments of Pathology and Dermatology and Associate Director of Surgical Pathology. Previously, he had a long career in private practice in a large muti-subspecialty pathology practice. He has been active in organized medicine and is a recent Past-President of the American Pathology Foundation. Dr. Perkocha has served on the boards of several regional business organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has a special interest in healthcare economics and policy and has also served on the business or scientific advisory boards of several technology companies.


Paul Raslavicus, M.D.

Paul Raslavicus

Dr. Raslavicus is the current Secretary-Treasurer of the World Association of Societies of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and is a Clinical Professor of Pathology at the Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Raslavicus has been deeply involved with the activities of the CAP for over two decades. He served as the chair of its Council on Government and Professional Affairs and its Information Services Committee. Within the latter he assessed the future of pathology informatics, digital pathology imaging, and the development of a pathology DICOM standard. Dr. Raslavicus was the College President from 2001-2003, and the College honored him as Pathologist of the Year in 2004.


John Spinosa, M.D., Ph.D.

John Spinosa

Dr. Spinosa is a partner at Laboratory Diagnostics Medical Group, a pathology group serving San Diego area hospitals. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Spinosa has been an active leader within the hospitals he covers. He has over 10 years experience chairing pathology departments, was Medical Director at Scripps East County from 1997-2000, and is currently the Chief of Staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. Dr. Spinosa also serves as the medical director at numerous San Diego area reference laboratories. Between 1994 and 2003, Dr. Spinosa served on the CAP Informatics Committee, was the CAP voting representative at HL7, and represented the CAP on the ANSI Health Information Standards Board.


Paul Urie, M.D., Ph.D.

Paul Urie

Dr. Urie is a surgical pathologist currently working for Intermountain Health Care in Utah, where he is the Medical Director of the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine clinical service. Dr. Urie has been practicing in Utah since the early 1980’s, during which time he has also maintained adjunct faculty positions at the University of Utah School of Medicine and at BYU, where he is in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Biology. Since 2002, he has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee at Tamtron Corporation. Dr. Urie has also served as the president of the Utah Society of Pathologists and has been a delegate to the Utah State Medical Society.
